Mid- Winter Convention Review
Attending Mid-Winter Convention in the shoes of a advisor rather than student was a different experience. Only having attended the convention once I did not recall some of the things that occurred. This was a really great experience to be refreshed and updated on new opportunities available for students.
I enjoyed listening to the state star announcements that described their SAE programs. I was surprised by some of them as I never thought to utilize things that I already had in a record book. This also provided good examples for some of the books that I am less familiar with. I am always to appreciative of the opportunities that students have for recognition. As an advisor I will encourage students to take advantage of the chapter jacket program as well as maintain superior books to be recognize as a region and state star.
As an FFA Advisor, if I brought students to attend the mid-winter convention I would definatly have things for them to do during the day before the convention starts. First off, Farm Show is an excellent opportunity to showcase Pennsylvania agriculture. Giving them a scavenger hunt is a good way for them to visit the entire complex and have enough to keep them busy.

Week 13
Good Afternoon,
Monday-
Leadership- Students worked on cutting out letters for A-Day Displays as well as work on other items for A-Day such as tweaking flyers and updating press releases. I have been making each day worth so many points because it has been hard to keep some students working. By doing this, I have found it to be fair to the students who are actually working.
Animal Science- Students are working on a research bases unit of instruction in CASE. They were looking up hormones. To help make the process make more sense I found it was best to create a timeline on the board. By having different students draw their hormone on the board I was able to maintain participation and check to make sure students are understanding the process.
Landscape- Students worked in the garden to transplant strawberries. I am struggling to keep all students working as well as having issues with students who do not want to participate due to the dirt. I stress that students may bring a change of shoes and clothes but it is still a challenge to keep them all working. I am debating developing a peer accountability system.
SAE- Students worked on researching information for the Maple Syrup Project.
Tuesday-
Leadership- In leadership students were working on displays, pairing food for spring trip and planted plugs in the greenhouse. The greenhouse has been a struggle to maintain al students working. I try to have them working on something different and then change gears to go the greenhouse however their work ethic is really poor.
Animal Science- In Animal Science I found a time table which pictures of the ovary to better discuss hormones. This process allowed students to review what they worked on yesterday as well as to visually see what was occurring. This type of review was very effective and I think brought a better sense of understanding to the material.
Landscape- Sub plans- left for Spring Trip.
Wednesday- Saturday- Spring Trip- I worked with Ms. Romberger over the past few weeks to plan out our Spring Trip to West Virginia. The Trip was a blast. It was very relaxing yet students had the opportunity to be as busy as they chose. We took all the students Zip Lining which was very challenging for some and many had to over come many fears. This was an excellent opportunity and a great activity for a group. This was very much a challenge for my group as we had a student who was paralyzed. She was a great sport and was amazing in what she was able to accomplish. I was so proud of how the students worked with each other to help pull her up the ladders an put on and off the line. The experience was very rewarding an exciting. I hope to be able to do something with my students.

Week 12
Good Afternoon,
Monday-
Leadership- Senior assembly- no class.
Animal Science- Utilized Nearpod app to help guide students through reproductive information about AI and how labs look and identify quality sperm cells. I added to my presentation on the nearpod app by having students answer questions and draw which really was able to show how much information the student took away. It also provided a good opportunity to wrap up thoughts from the class.
Landscape- We worked in the greenhouse today to plant plugs and organize.
SAE- Students worked on preparing for the upcoming events focusing on banquet.
Tuesday-
Leadership- In leadership most students were absent due to senior field trip so we worked on A-Day items.
Animal Science- In Animal Science we started a lab looking at sperm cells in order to take note of abnormalities of cells, concentration and motility. The lab went well, I wish I would have reviewed how to focus a microscope, I thought the students would have been faster at focusing them.
Landscape- In landscape students practiced making boutineers and wrist corsages with left over flowers. The students did a nice job at remembering what they needed to do. I was very frustrated with clean up efforts. I think in the future I will assign cleanup jobs prior to the start of clean up.
SAE- All students on field trip.
Wednesday-
Leadership- Today we combined both leadership classes to work as a joint force to plan and prepare educational displays for A-Day focusing on topics for "Ag in the Classroom". Another student and I worked together to plan the tractor and car show.
Animal Science- Today we continued working on the Animal Science lab. I was very frustrated with the lack of ability to read directions as students did not do steps in the proper order.
Landscape- Today we worked on creative arrangement designs and materials options. Students found examples online and reviewed as well as provided suggestions for all groups.
Thursday-
Leadership- Students worked together to research ares for A-Day.
Animal Science- In Animal Science students finished up their lab and concluding questions. We discussed what was seen and why, I felt it was a really good activity. Once completed students worked in their teams to prepare for tomorrows debate on AI verses Natural breeding.
Landscape-A guest speaker visited today to talk about native plants in Pennsylvania and what an invasive species was. She was from DCNR and provided us with lots of information about using native plants in our landscape we are working on. Hosting a guest speaker was a great opportunity that I intend to do more of in the future.
SAE- In SAE students worked on the senior slide show and coordinating it for the banquet.
Friday-
Leadership- Students worked on designing and getting approved their displays for A-Day.
Animal Science- In Animal Science we discussed rules of debate and proper procedure. I was really impressed with the debates that the students presented. They were finally well thought out and prepared. I am thankful that I made them redo the assignment, I think it said a lot for my expectations.
Landscape-Students put together their creative arrangements today! I was really impressed with how they turned out and how in to it the students were.

Farewell Student Teaching
"I always knew that
when I looked back
on the times I cried I would smile.
But I never knew
that when I looked back on the times I smiled
I would cry."
Monday will be rough. My student teaching experience at Cumberland Valley High School was the furthest from what I ever expected.. it was absolutely amazing. I had the opportunity to develop my own classroom and truly call the students my own. I will miss each and every one of them terribly.
The past 13 weeks consisted of many ups and downs, as well as many heart to hearts with students. The students were faced with many changes this semester and together we grew and were able to accomplish many things. The first part of my student teaching I taught students how to work hard, I set my expectations high and settled for nothing less. One student actually told me they hadn't work so hard before. That moment made me smile, and that's when I knew I truly loved what I was doing. Their hard work was recognized, I was proud of them, and they were proud of themselves.
In week 5 I had my students create a list of goals they they wanted to meet before they graduated in June. We discussed goals and held many discussions about the future, growing up, going to college and of course the importance of college scholarships. 8:10 am, it was Monday, week 6, and all of the pervious weeks discussions came to reality. The principle delivered some unexpected news and I found I needed to make a very big commitment to my students... 1) I would support them through anything, 2) We would accomplish all of their goals before June 6th.
The next 6 weeks would consist of many late nights, good discussions with my mentor teachers, lots of encouragement and plenty of patience - both mine and my students. We set many small goals - and celebrated them all! As a whole, we needed to learn to trust each other and compromise.
In the classroom we tried many new things with technology and resources that were are available. I learned that self discovery was key but holding them accountable is critical. By setting expectations, creating standards and nipping things right away my classroom experience was great. No, not every lesson goes as planned but that is all part of learning. I certainly learned not to lower my expectations for any student and that sometimes it is just a matter of a different approach. Despite the fact that I am an Animal Science person, teaching about plants and operating a greenhouse will keep things interesting.
By May 10th, we will have reached all of our goals. Teaching mostly seniors has been a rewarding challenge and I am very thankful for them. I am sincerely appreciative of my mentor teachers, Ms. Darla Romberger and Mr. Randy Cassell for all of their support and commitment this semester. This experience has been a unique opportunity that I am now prepared for anything. I will miss my students but look forward to working with them a few more times in the coming weeks.
But ultimatly at the end of my 13 weeks I learned the following:
1) Always be yourself. Your best qualities will always shine through the rainy days.
2) Have a plan.
3) Also have a plan B, C and maybe even D.
4) Occasionally you may have to skip to plan D. Tomorrow is another day.
5) Be flexible.
6) The best learning actually happens when you let go of the control.
7) As an Ag Teacher, the students do really tell you everything. You are their counselor, life coach, friend and sometimes their reality check.
8) Let your students teach. 1) you may learn something cool. 2) they will respect you even more.
9) Take your leadership team zip lining.
10) Students remember everything.
11) There are apps that control the TV. Always outsmart your students.
12) Don't reinvent the wheel. Do things right the first time.
13) Have a life outside of school.
14) Don't teach from the front of the room.
15) Maintenance and the custodial staff are the best.

Week 11
Good Afternoon,
Monday-
Leadership- Prep for speeches.
Animal Science- In Animal Science we laid out reproduction tracts of a female cow, pig and sheep. The students were able to compare the tracts as well as cut them apart to see the insides. It was really neat to find the fetal pigs about the size of a half dollar. In changes to the CASE curriculum, I would have presented the information more in-depth before looking at the real examples.
Landscape- We worked in the greenhouse today to plant plugs and organize.
SAE- Students worked on preparing for the upcoming events focusing on banquet.
Tuesday-
Leadership- Before the students started presenting speeches we reviewed good characteristics of a speech. I had kept high expectations for these speeches but was very disappointed with the results. I ultimately think it goes back to the mentality of the class because I don't feel it was anything less than what I presented as an example.
Animal Science- In Animal Science we took notes and reviewed questions and additional images from the day before. I was glad I reviewed and prompted many questions from students to make sure they understood the lab activity.
Landscape- In landscape we started making our round arrangements in order to practice before making the centerpieces for a banquet. To make sure I was clear about my instructions I posed lots of questions as students were working and also talked to students individually. I broke my instructions into clear steps that students completed as a whole, this worked out very well for clarity and keeping students on track. As I worked with students individually I felt I was better able to help them in areas they were weaker in.
Wednesday-
Leadership- I was pleased today with how the students asked and presented questions to make the speakers think and clarify. Some speeches were pretty good but the overall quality is poor. I'm very unsure of how to improve this. I am also concerned that I will have a student who refuses to present their speech. I have simply reminded any students that tomorrow is the final presentation day.
Animal Science- I found a really good AI video today that explained and demonstrated the process of AI. I as able to ad-lip and provide additional details to better inform the students.
Landscape- Today we worked on the second half of our round arrangements. I am very impressed with how the arrangements are turning out.
Thursday-
Leadership- I met and discussed with the Principle today to let them know how I had a few students who seemed as if they would not present a speech, she assured me that I should just simply put a zero in for a grade if they did not do the assignment. I asked the student who I though wasn't prepared before class if she was and she said no. In order to not draw any additional attention to her, I did not call her name when asking for my final presenters. After class she came and talked to me and we made arrangements for her to give her speech the next day. Also to keep the attention of the students since this was the third day of speeches, I gave them white boards to write down questions they had of the presenters. This turned out to be a great idea and kept students focused.
Animal Science- In Animal Science I presented the students with an Inquiry Based opportunity to model the female bovine reproductive system using balloons, life savors and rubber bands. This worked out well but I felt as if it took a lot of coaching. I feel my students struggle to think differently and more in depth because they are usually not asked to.
Landscape- In landscape we started making round arrangements for the Eagle Foundation Banquet. I laid instructions out to the students just as I did previously and it worked well. This time they were very cautious to prevent previous mistakes. It seemed to serve as a good learning opportunity to better understand how to create the arrangements.
SAE- In SAE students worked on the banquet script and brainstormed ideas to make the event better.
Friday-
Leadership-Friday was a work day for A-Day and Banquet prep. Students reviewed flyers and press releases that they generated to send out and be utilized for advertisements. I am glad they are able to see use out of their hard work in the classroom.
Animal Science- In Animal Science I gave the students a debate to work on with a scenario. This was a really good way to see what we needed to clarify as the students prepared their facts. I was very disappointed in what the one team produced and will give them additional time to find more facts and represent next week.
Landscape-We finalized the round arrangements. They looked really nice for the banquet.

Week 10
Good Afternoon,
Monday-
Leadership- Photography
Animal Science-
Landscape- In landscape we started making our round arrangements out of the tissue paper flowers. I explained the process to the students, however there was a lot going on that morning so I'm not sure if the students understood very clearly. To make sure I was clear about my instructions I posed lots of questions as students were working and also talked to students individually. As I worked with students individually I felt I was better able to help them in areas they were weaker in.

Animal Science- Quiz, Pearson Square Ice Cream
Landscape- 5th- Plugs/ setup
7th- round arrangement sketch
Friday-
Attended area CDE contests for Prepared Speaking, Extemp Speaking, Parli Pro and Opening Ceremonies. We took 15 contestants, all of which did very well. It was a good experience in preparation for helping to coordinate these events in the future and understanding the 'behind the scenes'.
