Week 10

Good Afternoon,

Monday

Leadership- Photography
Animal Science-
Landscape- In landscape we started making our round arrangements out of the tissue paper flowers. I explained the process to the students, however there was a lot going on that morning so I'm not sure if the students understood very clearly. To make sure I was clear about my instructions I posed lots of questions as students were working and also talked to students individually. As I worked with students individually I felt I was better able to help them in areas they were weaker in.

Week 9

Good Afternoon,

Monday- On Monday we started working on A-Day planning in leadership. The students had good ideas and it was helpful to discuss with Alumni members over the weekend to clarify information before the class discussion. I think breaking the students up into committees seems to be a good way to handle this class to productively accomplish tasks. In Animal Science I retaught the pearson square because it had been so long since we started covering that material. Students seemed to recall most information but needed to be refreshed about a few things. I mixed things up by having students demo the problems on the board to check answers. I would like to try in the future to have one student write and another student tell the other student what needs to happen. In landscape we learned about materials used in floriculture and watched a video about the processes of cutting and mailing flowers from producers. This worked out well to inform students of the process as they were surprised about what they learned. I struggled with this class today and I think mixing things up more will help. In SAE I explained an SAE implementation project that I wanted the students to create to leave for members in the future. They seem fairly excited about it and I think it will work well.

Tuesday- In leadership I presented a powerpoint on how to properly write a thank you note. I was surprised by the inability of students to properly write one and was thankful I had examples on the slide show to leave up. Students wrote notes of thanks to supporters and resent events that we attended. In Animal Science students actually got to implement their own feed ration! It was awesome, they did the math via the pearson square and then made the calculations to determine how much ingredients were needed to make chex mix. The students loved it and it was a good lesson, much needed as the CASE unit was getting dry. In landscape students took a materials quiz on floriculture, it was pretty simple but to correctly answer a few questions they needed to be listening and taking notes. Once done we started to make boutineers. I kept the students hustling as they needed to make 2 paper flowers before we could actually make the boutineer. SAE continued working on their projects.

Wednesday- Leadership continued working on thank you notes as each student had an assigned list to write to. All students finished their notes and signed the others. I should have had something small for them to do at the end. In Animal Science we started solving problems in order to be able to enter information into a real system to calculate feed rations. Students did fairly well to determine the answers and work through things with just guiding support. In landscaping we learned about how value is given to materials and how things are priced. The 7th period class didn't get through the entire boutineer but it didn't take them long to make. In SAE students worked on projects and submitted work.

Thursday-

In leadership students learned about what was in and how to write a press release. The remainder of the period was spent brainstorming and coming up with information to include in their press releases for upcoming events. In animal science students continued work on 5.5.4 but it is taking them longer then I planned so they will need to finish tomorrow. I took the landscaping class outside to check out the area that we will be working on, as a class we brainstormed ideas and parameters to consider. Students will be developing their ideas into a design to propose to the maintenance department for approval. In SAE students worked on organizing old scrapbooks for the 60th banquet and memorizing speeches.

Friday-

Good Afternoon,

Monday- SLLC

Tuesday- SLLC

Wednesday- Today in leadership students wrapped up what they worked on with the sub. They finalized speeches, extemporaneous speeches and worked on planning our itinerary for Spring Trip. In Animal Science student researched and began preparing presentations for the petting zoo on their assigned animal. In both landscaping classes they worked on creating tissue-paper flowers to be used next week as they begin to start making arrangements. Talking and behavior seemed to be better during 5th period, I think the new room arrangement is helping. In SAE students worked on some petting zoo organization and researched spring trip activities.

Thursday-
In leadership we had a work day in preparation for the Petting Zoo. I was sincerely impressed with the amount of work the students were able to accomplish cleaning up the shop. In Animal Science students finalized their research by creating animal posters to be displayed at the petting zoo. In Landscaping students presented their work from Monday and Tuesday. After the presentations we went through the next phase of the power point on forticulture color. I am still disappointed in the work ethic and conceptualizing of information in my 5th period class in comparison to the 7th period.
Friday-
Friday was a very hectic day with the Petting Zoo. I am very proud of a student in my leadership class that organized the entire petting zoo. He did a really nice job making contacts, logistics and announcements. The petting zoo was very busy but not crowded because we had the large animals outside and the smaller ones inside so the people were spread out between outside- the bay- the shop- the lab and the greenhouse. Follow-up thank you notes will be sent to those how supplied animals.

Week 7 3/3-3/7

Good Afternoon,

Monday- Today was an interesting day. The Principle visited each of my classes today to inform the students of the current situation at Cumberland Valley. The students took the new well as they know we all will be here if they need anything. Immediately in Leadership we began discussion options for spring trip so that way the students would have something to look forward to. The students are excited and have been coming up with fun activities that we could check out. The Animal Science class viewed a powerpoint.  I think I did a good job of asking and prompting questions at the class to keep them thinking about the content.  I have some really smart kids in the class so I need to challenge them to think deeper. Landscaping had a workday to meet with groups in order to do their forma presentations tomorrow. We discussed what a formal presentation looks like and what both the presenter and audience should be doing during it. For tomorrow I want to prepare an evaluation for each student so they are paying attention and taking note to the presenters. In SAE students worked on finalizing/ editing proficiency applications as we discussed what a asset and non- productive asset was.

Tuesday- In Leadership today we worked on finalizing teachers luncheon and preparing speeches. I continue to do mini lessons on speeches and that seems to offer a good break between actually learning and working on speeches. In Animal Science students started working on solving dry matter equation problems and % nutrient per feed type. Students struggled greatly with solving the math problems and understanding the why behind some of the problems. As we got into it I realized that I needed to do more rechecks so I would ask students after a certain point to stop and do a quick understanding check. This helped but it was still a struggle. Landscape had time to wrap up presentations and started to present. I was pleased with the content as we stress more about what a formal presentation should look like. In SAE students worked on proficiency applications.

Wednesday- In leadership students worked on speeches and putting their content into words. Animal Science we continued working on the math problems. Before the class I sat down and looked more into some of the whys and results behind the problems. At the beginning of the class I started out explaining key concepts. I think this helped students in there understanding. I was still struggling with kid shutting down because "they are not good at math". My goal was that they understand the general concept. In landscape students presented career presentations. The speeches were good yet there were some really poor presentations. My goal is to help these students put together stronger formal public speeches. In SAE students were still working on proficiency and understanding how to sell themselves as an individual and what they and their SAE is capable of.

Thursday-
In leadership half the class is working on writing speeches while the other is working on peer editing and making improvements based on content. I am disappointed with their progress as I feel they aren't being very productive. I struggle to keep them on track despite continual walking around, I threaten to take points away and I'm literally not sure what else to do some days. I think a lot of this goes back to the week they are having and the current substitute. In Animal Science we took an open note quiz on the previous section of feed stuffs. We peer graded the quiz and I was glad we did because we were able to make a stronger connection and clarify material. In landscape we began with a powerpoint on Introduction to Floriculture. Again my 5th period class was way off track (same students as leadership) and I told them I would be changing their seats tomorrow. When comparing my 7th period class we accomplished a lot more by getting through the powerpoint and getting a good start on the on floriculture history project. In SAE we are still working on finishing and peer reviewing proficiency applications. The progression was good today as they are realizing they need to be completed tomorrow.
Friday-
Leadership worked on submitting speeches. All students were to time themselves to see where they were at as far as time wise. If they were low on time I helped them find areas to expand on. I was surprised with how many were completed in order to submit for the area contest. In Animal Science we finished reviewing conclusion questions and making a stronger connection despite the vast conclusion and shut down over the math problems. It came to the point that honestly they get the general concept which is what I wanted but its not worth any more struggle. We moved on to the pearson square but everyone seems to be on the same page. In landscape we did a mini landscape/ florial design/ terrarium. This was a good wrap up to landscape and  intro to floriculture. Side note in 5th period I changed seats, it didn't go over and a student walked out guidance. They will get over it and I talked to guidance to make sure the student arrived at guidance. They supported my decision to change seats for classroom management purposes. SAE is finalized their proficiencies, I am pleased with the quality for the most part.

Week 6 2/24-2/28

Good Afternoon,

Monday- This week started out strong as I started my leadership class out by first asking what issues they were concerned about in agriculture. This lead into introducing the prepared speaking contest and conservation option. All of the students selected really good topics that I think will generate lots of interesting discussion and search of interesting facts. The more I think about how impressed I am with my students speach topics I wish Cumberland County had a county contest before Area to provide practice and help weed out the students. I think this is something if I would end up in the area I would like to potentially offer other options for the students because I personally am not looking forward to selecting just three to move on. I have discussed with my co-teacher about our options to select students. In Animal Science we were able to started our feed lab in order to determine the energy content of feed. This was my first lab with the students and it went really well. It is such a different situation from my AFNR lab. In AFNR I presented a PowerPoint and then students went to the lab to practice/ inquire about the new equipment that they will be using this week. Landscape was interesting today as we started learning about turf grasses per student request. Students also researched career opportunities in the local area involving turf. In this class I'm struggling with classroom management when they are working on assignments. In SAE students worked on proficiency applications. In the future, I will provide prime examples of proficiency applications to help students develop stronger answers.

Tuesday- In Leadership today we worked on finalizing teachers luncheon and preparing speeches. I continue to do mini lessons on speeches and that seems to offer a good break between actually learning and working on speeches. In Animal Science students looked up information on essential nutrients. This information is rather dry so I incorporated their favorite foods into the CASE worksheet to allow students to make connections between content and classifying their foods. Leadership presented their turf career information and opportunities. I need to plan out some quick go to articles to have students read/ answer questions on if they get finished early because the 5th period class accomplishes less than the 7th period.

Wednesday- In leadership students worked on speeches and researching. Animal Science students classified different types of feeds and feed additives. I think next time I wouldn't have labeled the feeds and set it up more like a skill a thon to have the students try to determine what kind of feed it was or mineral. I think this would have challenged the more than the classification because my students seem more advanced. In landscape I we learned about proper care for lawns I terms of mowing. In order to make my students pay attention I had them pick select groups that they would then be in to take a group quiz the next day. I will use this technique again as I seen positive results as far as attention and taking the content more seriously. The half of the SAE class are about done their proficiency applications at this point, this will leave us in a good place to begin peer reviewing.

Thursday-
In leadership students had a work day in order to count and sort food from the February Food Drive that we can use the numbers for a grant. Other students began prepping for teacher luncheon and hanging up decorations. In the animal science class I was trying to teach them information from a powerpoint provided by CASE. The powerpoints are rather dry so I think next time I need to do more to spruce them up. I will look into either using Nearpod or Prezi to make them more interactive. Landscape took their group quizzes an then I started them on a careers assignment to wrap up the landscaping unit. In SAE I printed out students proficiency applications that were completed to allow them to peer review and other students worked on theirs. I think next time I will provide a rubric so the students take more time and are able to provide more constructive advice.

Friday-
Today was teachers luncheon. Students worked very hard to help prepare food and setup the library while in leadership. The Animal Science class wrapped up their lab worksheet from the previous day with the sub while I helped other FFA members prepare food. In the landscaping classes students worked on their group assignments and then played Ag Trivia towards the end of class. The SAE used the time to cleanup and organize.
